Though it can take many forms, aftercare is most commonly the process of attending to a partner after a BDSM scene or activity. Participating in scenes involving power exchange, discipline, bondage, or consensual nonconsent (among many other behaviors and dynamics) can bring up feelings that may cause discomfort if they go unprocessed or unresolved. Although this is a possibility, most people engaging in BDSM behavior find aftercare soothing because their experiences can be emotionally or physically draining due to their intensity. Spending time after a scene reviewing what happened or being tender and close to a partner (or choosing to have some solitary space) can be exceptionally therapeutic and restorative. Other common behaviors during aftercare can include holding, cuddling, kissing, relaxing, and exchanging kind words. Though we often believe that the submissive partner in a dominant/submissive relationship needs more aftercare, this is not always the case depending on the scene, mood, and relationship dynamic. When engaging in any type of intimate or sexual activity, it’s vital that consent be explicitly given for all actions being made, and that all partners feel cared for and comfortable with what goes on. Aftercare is a beneficial and integral part of a healthy sexual lifestyle of all kinds, but is specifically important with BDSM activity. An unprocessed scene is just like a life unexamined: not quite worth it. Get communicating!

Aftercare is super important. I honestly think it should be used after every sexual activity regardless of if BDSM was involved but definitely include it every time you try something new, or any time you try something that may be painful to one or more partners including intercourse and anal play.
